St Francis sits piously in the garden oblivious to the snow around him. I actually had to dig out the 3 foot statue. This year winter came early, first with heavy snow then the -35 C temperatures that settled in for days. With the frigid temperatures the battery in my car died, thankfully I was on holiday and just stayed in until my brother-in-law came with a replacement. Can't wait for spring, not sure how I will get through another 3 months of this!<br />

Winter has lasted forever here in the Gatineau hills, will spring ever come? Winter came early, is staying late and we had more than twice the amount of snow we had last year. I still have snow in my yard and just yesterday morning I woke up to a dusting of new snow (it left quickly but still). Last year at this time I had daffodils blooming, this year only crocus. The daffodils are trying though, poking their stems through the ice! Can't wait to see them, along with new bunch of Darwin tulips planted last fall. Last spring I missed most of the show as I was away in beautiful Provence.<br />

He is actually watching a martial arts fight scene from James Bond, Man with a Golden Gun! He watched the whole fight scene! He actually seems to like TV and music. His favorite is the bagpipes. One night while watching a BBC program about the islands around Britain featuring a bag pipe band he began to sing along with the bagpipes. I laughed so hard I could barely breathe. He on the other hand was very serious standing tall and singing along. He must be a reincarnated Scot.</div>

All things are transient and change at the whim of fate. The wheel tells us to be sensitive to the ebb and flow of life. With the loss of my beloved Poonie comes the appearance of a handsome gentleman that found himself without a home. His story is similar to Poonies including the fear of men. So yesterday I adopted a 3 year old male Boston Terrier.</div>

Your energetic and confident style allows you to get motivated about even the dullest of projects, and brings enthusiasm into the lives of others. People who identify with salmon like to live in the present, enjoying the company of many friends and ongoing activities. No one was cooped up, they enjoyed eating bugs and grass in the fields. Today our supermarket meat comes to us through the suffering of the poor animals. Even our eggs are laid by abused hens. I eat more vegan meals and try to buy meat and eggs from local farmers that take care of their animals unlike the massive corporate farms.<br />

The commercial below was produced by a non-profit animal rights group and hopefully helps to educate the public on the treatment of animals destined for our supermarket shelves. Let us all strive to be vegan at least one day a week!<br />

I moved in to my little cottage at the end of last August. The inside was painted dark grey, dark taupe and dark brownish pumpkin orange! Even though I work at least 40 hours a week and spend a little more than an hour a day commuting back and forth I painted the whole place myself. I chose cottage white and daffodil yellow for the walls and a light blue called escarpment for the ceilings (I always like to look up and see the sky). Since I am in the country and several of my windows are high I chose not to put up curtains. I have such lovely views, a forest to look onto at the front, lilacs on both sides and a lovely garden at the back. Today a neighbor from down the road came for a visit. She looked around and then informed me she had very good taste and would be more than happy to come over and help me decorate. I said rather sheepishly "I did decorate". But to her no curtains, off white and light yellow walls, art posters of Van Gogh's sunflowers, sculptures by Fedak and a purple yoga mat permanently in the middle of the living room for my daily yoga amounted to no taste. Well I have decided I do have taste, my own! I may add curtains though in the living room like in the pic above.Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15369965896922916118noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780317548810336933.post-68511444386523061452011-07-22T13:28:00.000-04:002011-07-22T13:28:00.307-04:00How To Make Plant Supports<object height="370" width="460">

Have you ever had one of those moments when you realize you are exactly where you are supposed to be? It happened to me this morning at 5:30am. I was in the kitchen getting my lunch ready to take to work and I was standing in front of the kitchen window. It had been raining, the air was cool and a breeze blew in through the open window bringing with it the heady scent of Lilacs. The scent was so strong, I felt so strange and I realized this is where I was meant to be. I took several deep breaths, I wanted the feeling to last, it was pure joy. <br />

I called my little house Lilac Cottage because the property is flanked on both sides by lilac bushes. To my delight the bushes are just loaded with blooms. I like to think the lilacs are happy I'm here and are putting on their best blooms!<br />

Next came the daffodils which I have to say have been a bit of a disappointment. I planted 25 and only 13 came up. I was afraid to let her go out alone, so I donned my winter cloak and I carried Pounie outside in my arms (she was wearing her sweater but in this weather it is not enough). I put her down and commanded PEE! She did. We quickly went back in and started the morning coffee. What a cutie!<br />

I sleep in peace, I have my dog Pounie and when spring comes I will have my own garden in my back AND front yard. I think lawns are a waste of valuable gardening space. This weekend we were back to normal -19 Celsius with the wind chill and about 10 cm of snow fell. So Pounie and I were out cleaning off the driveway. The air was crisp and clean, a great way to get some exercise.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">With the new house I splurged and got a satellite dish for the TV, well really had no choice if I wanted any TV at all up here. I have been enjoying watching the food network which has inspired me to cook more. I suffer from Celiac disease and cannot eat most grains. I haven't had many cravings since I went on my celiac diet but of late I have had the desire for some Chinese food, shrimp balls in particular. Chinese food is out because some is breaded and the rest has soya sauce that is made with wheat, who knew! You can find soya sauce made with soya beans but it is more expensive and so the restaurants don't use it. I have some and do make stir fries but never shrimp balls. I found a recipe for a tempura batter using potato starch. I tried it out and my shrimp balls were amazing! The batter puffed up beautifully and was tasty. I had some left over and didn't want to throw it out but I had no shrimp left. Then I had an epiphany, here in Canada we have a treat called a beaver tail. It is bread dough that is flattened like a beaver tail, deep fried and topped with things like sugar, cinnamon, chocolate. Just delicious and often eaten after partaking in some kind of winter sport. Along the famous Rideau Canal in Ottawa there are booths every where selling beaver tails. So I dropped my left over dough in the oil and since there was no filling they puffed up but stayed a little flat. I sprinkled them with sugar and cinnamon and I thought wow beaver balls! They were scrumptious, I ate them all. So much for healthier eating, well they were not that bad except for being cooked in canola oil.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

One of my new year's resolutions is to drink more fresh juice. The celery balancer is suppose to help with arthritis of which I suffer from. It's easy to make if you have a juicer, just throw in 4 stalks of celery, 1 apple, 1 carrot, 1/2 red grapefruit and a handful of grapes. I try to use organic produce if I can find it and it's not too expensive.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is the south west corner of my backyard, first pic is now and second was taken in June when I first came to see the house. When I moved in, there was an old metal doorless shed with a rotten floor in this spot. I had the shed hauled away and this weekend ripped up the rotting floor. There are also 3 small manitoba maples that had to be cut down. You see my backyard is small and I want a garden more than anything. I have waited 10 long years to garden again and finally this spring I will be able to dig into my own soil and plant. The trees would also eventually interfere with my septic system so it was best to get rid of them. I still have Cedric (large cedar in the front), another huge manitoba maple along the driveway and of course all the wonderful lilac trees I named the house after.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

So I went over to one of my neighbours and asked him if he knew anyone that I could hire to come and cut the trees down. He said "oh I'll come and do it" and he went in the garage came out with his chainsaw and got to it! Above is Martial cutting down the trees.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Just wash pumpkin, cut in a few pieces, add a bit of water in the bottom of a pan and bake at 375 for about an hour. After it is easy to remove the skin and mash.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I am loving my little house, the move was not without a few glitches but I feel at peace here. I am further from work but most of the extra drive is in the country so the view is amazing. All the trees dressed in their best autumn colors, and after years of dreaming of planting fall bulbs I can finally plant some! I ordered the bulbs from Veseys an east coast seed company that carries the best seeds, plants and bulbs. </div><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">I chose a collection of scented tulips for the front yard beside the driveway so that when I step out of the car I can hopefully smell them. I also ordered a gorgeous fuschia pink tulip called Barcelona, a collection of daffodils that promises 100 days of blooms! Oh and more tulips and dutch irises, all in all almost 200 bulbs!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

The lilac bushes are covered with snow! The snow will not last, it should all be melted by late afternoon but it will soon be here to stay. I have found all my winter gear but the knits need a wash to freshen them up, I will do that today.<br />

For the time being she moved in with my aunt and uncle on their farm but as soon as I had my own house again Rose would come back to live with me. My aunt and uncle took good care of Rose and loved her dearly. I would visit Rose often and she never forgot me. Unfortunately being able to afford a house by myself has taken me 12 years and Rose passed away 2 years ago. I felt so very sad. The day after I moved into my house my sister made me the most wonderful gift of her 8 year old Boston Terrier named Poupoune. Not overly fond of the name but can't change it! Poupoune has settled in quickly. She suits me to a tee, she enjoys a vigorous walk but over all is not active dog. She even seems to enjoy settling down on the couch with me and a snack while we watch Mystery on TV.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

The temperature inside the house was tolerable, I opened the windows to let the air in, the house has been closed up for over a year. I really didn't have a lot of time had to come to work early today, all week actually, blah..... So I thought I would have a little talk with the current residents, the lovely, delicate, long legged spiders that have been squatting in Lilac Cottage. I sternly informed them that I have bought the house and if they did not want to be squished or vacuumed up they better vamoose within the next couple of days. I really don't want to squish them or vacuum them, maybe I'll collect them and carry them across the road and let them go in the forest.<br />

So the other day I went to the dollar store and for $1.25 I bought myself a windsock. I hung it in the cedar tree and think it looks quite nice, hopefully the good fortune will show up soon.Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15369965896922916118noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780317548810336933.post-83776472291352674742010-07-29T13:24:00.000-04:002010-07-29T13:24:51.138-04:00Lilac Cottage<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQEfJVyzG94O4LLgXA5GS0U9xADLW1aqVEzsu9Vslc7Q8_exREeajgNYiG2dkpqITdgZsfXbljWoILL4_SxXy0cKRoAXYBtt-wuVFcW38Rb98-3JlKRkxbX4baS58HhSlYHMzfE3d3Y7nj/s320/lilac+cottage.JPG" /></div><br />
After living in a Coop for 10 years, I have finally managed to buy a house! It's a tiny house that I have named Lilac Cottage because on both sides of the property from front to back are lilac bushes. I take possession next Tuesday. I just can't wait, the tulip bulbs have already been ordered for fall! The house needs a bit of work but I'm sure with some TLC the place will be just heaven. No more noisy upstairs neighbor making a racket at 4:30 in the morning, no more counsel meetings that drag on forever and parking for friends who stay over in the winter.
